Discipline versus Motivation

A few posts ago, I discussed finding motivation from motivational quotes.

Today, I want to discuss discipline. I was riding the exercise bike this morning for a 60-minute ride. Again, I really didn’t want to do, but I needed to get more miles completed.

The instructor talked about discipline over motivation. Again, I didn’t feel motivated to get on the bike this morning, but I was disciplined. If you recall, I’m trying to ride 400 miles this month for a charity challenge, and today being the halfway point in January, I need to log at least 200 miles by the end of the day to remain on track to meeting my goal of 400 miles. So even though I didn’t want to get on the bike at 4 am and ride with other riders from the UK and Germany, I needed to put in the hours to make sure my miles happened.

One the instructor's quotes that really stood out to me during the ride was, “… Continue to think about the discipline over motivation. Motivation is nice, but it’s fleeting.” He continued to discuss the importance of discipline over motivation.

That’s so true. Motivation can come and go. But if you’re disciplined, you will always move forward.

Here’s a couple of quick reads on discipline versus motivation:
