Happy Lunar New Year to those who celebrate!

As we enter the Year of the Snake in the Chinese zodiac, it’s a perfect time to reflect on how the characteristics of the snake can guide you to success on the bar exam. The snake symbolizes wisdom, adaptability, and strategic precision—all of which are crucial skills for navigating the bar exam.

‼️ Stay Alert for Fact Traps

Many bar exam essays and multiple-choice questions contain carefully placed facts that may either support the correct answer or mislead you toward an incorrect choice. Just like a snake might camouflage itself in its surroundings, the exam presents details that require close reading and analysis. Read carefully and identify subtle but significant facts that impact the outcome, especially those designed to mislead you into selecting an incorrect answer.

⚡️ Strike with Precision

A snake doesn't waste energy on unnecessary movement, and neither should you in your essay responses. Follow CIRAC precisely, directly answering the call of the question without getting lost in irrelevant discussion. The bar exam essays aren't a test of everything you know—they're a test of knowing what's relevant and examining that. Remember, examiners and lawyers don't want you to overcharge the client, and that's what you're doing when you address issues you're not supposed to.

🙌 Adaptability Wins

Snakes thrive in different environments by adapting. Similarly, bar exam success requires strategic flexibility—if one approach isn't working (like a memorization-heavy method), shift to practice questions, active recall, or teaching concepts to yourself out loud. With just a few weeks until the bar exam, now's the time to practice that flexibility and refine your approach.

⏱️ Timing is Key

Just as a snake knows when to strike, bar takers must master time management. Whether on the MBE, essays, or performance tests, recognize when to move on rather than get stuck on one tricky question. With just a few weeks until the bar exam, now is the time to take simulated exams under test-like conditions. Taking two MPTs back-to-back is very different from taking just one, and writing six MEEs in a three-hour block is much more demanding than answering a single essay question. These full-length simulations build endurance and improve your ability to manage time effectively on exam day.

🐍 Embrace the Snake’s Mental Resilience

In many cultures, the snake is a symbol of transformation and renewal. For you, this means maintaining a growth mindset and resilience in the face of challenges:

  • If a practice test goes poorly, use it as a learning opportunity rather than a setback.

  • If a concept is difficult to grasp, approach it from multiple angles—outlining, teaching it aloud, applying it to practice questions, or reaching out to your law professors.

  • If anxiety sets in, embrace breathing exercises or mindfulness techniques to stay focused.

The Year of the Snake reminds you that success on the bar exam is not about brute force but about strategy, adaptability, and precise execution. By channeling the snake’s ability to move with purpose, adapt to challenges, and strike with precision, you can navigate the bar exam confidently and effectively.
